As time has passed, hybrid and electric vehicles have taken the automotive world by storm, and they’re only going to grow in popularity!
If you’ve never driven a hybrid or electric car and want to know what all the fuss is about while also figuring out which one of these innovative automobiles would make a great companion for your Rising Sun, Havre de Grace, and North East, MD, adventures, Ourisman Tri-State Ford can show you the way with this Hybrid vs Electric vehicle guide!
Exploring Hybrid Vehicles
We’ll kick things off here by talking about hybrid vehicles. The first-ever hybrid vehicle was produced in 1997 and have only gotten better with time. Hybrid vehicles operate similarly to traditional gas-powered vehicles, as they feature a gas engine and an electric motor, the latter of which allows the engine to shut off at low speeds. This leads to one of the major benefits of driving a hybrid – excellent gas mileage.
Hybrid vehicles are also very environmentally friendly, as they produce lower emissions than a traditional gas car. What’s more, they’re usually more powerful than a traditional gas car. And best of all, they don’t need to be plugged in like an electric car!
That being said, there are also plug-in hybrid cars available, which travel on some electricity, usually about 20 to 40 miles. This is because they have a larger battery than regular hybrids and in order to work, will need to be charged. Once the battery loses its charge, however, it can still operate on fuel and will give you great mileage!
Taking a Look at Electric Vehicles
Electric vehicles, often referred to as EVs and sometimes BEVs (battery electric vehicles) rely solely on a battery to get you around town, which means you’ll never need to hit the gas station before or during your adventures.
Like you would a plug-in hybrid, you would plug the vehicle into your home to charge. This is a major benefit because it usually is cheaper to charge a car than it is to put gas in it. Furthermore, maintenance for an electric vehicle may cost you less because there are parts that it doesn’t have when compared to a hybrid or gas vehicle.
Many EVs will last you up to a few hundred miles before you’d need to charge it. So, if you’re planning on taking a long trip, you’ll need to map out electric charging stations on your route.
Hybrid vs Electric: Which Is Right for Me?
Deciding between a hybrid and an electric vehicle? The great thing is that there is no wrong choice. It all comes down to personal preference. When you’re looking at your options, consider your family size, how often you drive, how far you drive, what the cost of maintenance would be, etc.
Additionally, consider your living situation. If you rent, you may not have charging stations readily available. If you own a home and have an electric vehicle, you can simply plug your charger into a wall outlet.
Regardless of which type of vehicle you choose, the team at Ourisman Tri-State Ford will assist you in getting behind the wheel. Contact us today to take a test drive on the streets of Rising Sun, Havre de Grace, and North East, MD!
