Ford F-150 vs Toyota Tundra: Engines & Power

2021 Ford F-150 performance and power

For many truck shoppers like you, acceleration and towing capacity likely sit high on your list of priorities. Although both trucks offer over 10,000 pounds of maximum towing capacity when properly equipped, there’s a clear winner in this category.

Towing Capacity & Payload

When properly outfitted with the 400-horsepower 3.5L EcoBoost® V6 engine and other necessary equipment, the 2021 Ford F-150 can tow up to a whopping 14,000 pounds.

The 2021 Toyota Tundra, on the other hand, maxes out at 10,200 pounds with its 381-horsepower motor and when properly equipped. The F-150 also has a higher maximum payload capacity of 3,325 pounds compared to the Tundra’s 1,730 pounds when both are properly equipped.

With the F-150, drivers will therefore be able to tow and haul plenty of additional equipment than they would if they opted for the Tundra.

Hybrid Capability

2021 Ford F-150 hybrid capabilityAlong with that robust engine option, this Ford truck also offers a 3.5L PowerBoost™ Full Hybrid V6 engine that puts out a remarkable 430 horsepower and can tow up to 12,700 pounds when properly equipped.

In comparison, the 2021 Toyota Tundra does not offer a hybrid engine like its Ford competitor.

Engine Options

In fact, the Toyota Tundra only offers one engine option, a standard V8 one. The Ford F-150, on the other hand, offers much more variety.

In addition to that full hybrid engine, there’s also a turbo-diesel engine, multiple V6 engines, and a V8 engine for a total of seven options to choose from.

The F-150’s V8 engine also manages to slightly outperform that of the Tundra’s. It can produce up to 400 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque compared to the Tundra’s V8 engine that produces 381 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque.

Ford F-150 vs Toyota Tundra: Fuel Economy

If you plan on traveling long distances in your truck, then you’ll want to focus on fuel economy metrics, too. With better mileage from your engine, you can enjoy the open road for long journeys and shorter commutes just the same.

The Ford F-150 manages to provide better fuel economy than the Toyota Tundra. On the Tundra, a 4x2 truck will only allow you to travel up to an EPA-estimated 13 city/18 highway MPG.

Compare that to the Ford F-150’s standard engine with a 4x2 drivetrain, which offers an EPA-estimated 20 city/24 highway MPG.

The full hybrid engine on the F-150 generates even greater fuel economy metrics. With it, you will see an EPA-estimated 25 city/26 highway MPG with a 4x2 drivetrain.

Ford F-150 vs Toyota Tundra: Interior & Technology

2021 Ford F-150 interior technologiesBoth the Toyota Tundra and the Ford F-150 offer numerous trim levels, with the Tundra offering six and the F-150 providing eight options. As you move up the ladder, you will find more premium appointments and advanced technologies in each cab.

Infotainment on the Road

In terms of technology, the 2021 Tundra offers an enlarged 8-inch touchscreen option.

However, the Ford F-150 takes infotainment and navigation to another level with its optional 12-inch center-stack screen. Like having an integrated tablet in your Ford truck, this convenient screen makes it almost effortless to access your smartphone apps, music library, and more.

The Ford F-150 also offers a few other sensory-enhancement and convenience upgrades, such as:

  • Ambient lighting: Envelopes the cabin in an appealing glow.
  • Wireless charging pad: Keeps your battery charged without the cords.
  • B&O Sound System Unleashed by Bang & Olufsen: Immerses you in your favorite tunes.

On top of these entertaining amenities, the Ford F-150 pickup can transform into an office on wheels, thanks to its available Interior Work Surface. This mini table can be easily folded in and out of the center console.

Unfortunately, you won’t find these amenities in the 2021 Toyota Tundra.

F-150 vs Tundra: Exterior & Convenience

2021 Ford F-150 exterior and convenienceWhen it comes to utility in the back, both trucks offer front tow hooks, along with plenty of bed attachments to help secure your equipment for both work and play.

One option you’ll only find in the Ford truck, though, is the available Pro Power Onboard. This system acts as a generator, putting out up to 7.2kW of power, so you can continue working into the night.

Light at Night

Plus, with the optional LED box lighting with zone lighting, you can illuminate specific areas in and around your Ford truck to maximize visibility while you get things done after dark.

The 2021 Toyota Tundra does not offer a comparable option to this system or the Pro Power Onboard mentioned earlier.

Bed and Cab Styles

When it comes to the overall appearance of your truck, both the F-150 and the Tundra offer different cab styles and bed sizes. Both offer 5.5-foot and 6.5-foot beds. There’s also a longer bed that measures 8 feet on the F-150 and 8.1 feet on the Tundra.

However, the F-150 is the only one of the two to offer three different cab styles compared to the Tundra’s two options. On the F-150, there’s Regular Cab, SuperCab, and SuperCrew. On the Tundra, you’ll find a Double Cab and a CrewMax option.

If you’re going for a specific cab and bed combination, you may have better luck finding what you want on the Ford F-150 due to its options.
