Service Engine Soon

First up in this Ford F-150 dashboard guide, we’ll discuss the Service Engine Soon light. This light looks like your engine block and it may turn on for multiple reasons.

If you see this light when your ignition is on but your engine is off, this is normal. However, if you see this light when your engine is on, that means your emission control system needs service.

If the light is flashing, that means your engine requires service. In this case, avoid heavy acceleration and deceleration. Take your vehicle in for an inspection as soon as possible.

Powertrain Warning Lamp

This Ford F-150 dashboard light is shaped like a wrench. If it’s illuminated while the engine is running, that suggests an issue with the powertrain or 4-wheel drive. If you see this light flashing while you’re driving, you should slow down and avoid heavy acceleration or deceleration.

If you see this light together with the Service Engine Soon light and your engine is running, you shouldn’t continue driving your vehicle. Pullover as soon as it’s safe to do so. You should turn off your ignition and then attempt to restart your engine. Continuing to drive could cause the engine to stop working. 

Regardless, whenever you see this light, take your Ford F-150 in for service as soon as possible.

Brake System

This warning light will either look like the word “BRAKE” in all capital letters or an encircled exclamation point with parentheses around it. This light will turn on when you apply the parking brake and the ignition is on.

However, you might also see this light when your vehicle is in motion. If that’s the case, check your parking brake to confirm it is off. If your parking brake is engaged, adjust accordingly. You might also find that your parking brake is already released. That indicates a low brake fluid level or an issue with the brake system.

If you think there is an issue with your brake system, take your Ford F-150 for service when it’s safe to do so. A technician can adjust your brake fluid or troubleshoot the issue with your brake system.

Low Tire Pressure

This light is an exclamation point surrounded by a horseshoe-like shape with a flat bottom. When you see this light on, that means you need to check your tire pressure. When it’s safe to do so, stop your vehicle and add air to your tires. You can perform this simple service for free at most gas stations.

In some instances, you might also see this warning light flash. In that case, you need to bring your vehicle in for service because a flashing tire pressure light indicates a system issue.
