Anti-Lock Braking System

This system in your Ford Explorer helps you maintain control over your steering in the event of an emergency. You might see a light on your dashboard that looks like the letters “ABS” in all caps, surrounded by a circle and parentheses on both sides.

Ordinarily, this light should briefly illuminate when you turn on the vehicle’s ignition or apply the parking brake. If you do not see this light when you turn on the ignition, there may be something wrong with the Anti-lock Braking System in your vehicle. If the light remains on or starts flashing, it may also indicate a system problem. 

If that’s the case, you should have it checked out. Your normal brakes will still work while the Anti-lock Braking System is down. However, you should have the system looked at, so you can stay safe in the future.

Engine Oil

Have you ever heard the phrase “like a well-oiled machine?” This warning light looks like an oil lamp and indicates your engine fluid levels may be low. Having a properly oiled engine prevents friction and keeps the parts running smoothly for optimal adventuring.

If you see this light while your engine is running, pull over as soon as it's safe. You should switch off your engine and have a professional examine the issue.

Low Tire Pressure Warning

Next up in this light guide, we’ll address the Low Tire Pressure Warning light. This light looks like an exclamation point surrounded by a horseshoe-like shape with a flat bottom.

When you see this light on, you should pull over to check your tire pressure when it’s safe to do so. You can easily do this at most gas stations. Driving on properly inflated tires will make your ride smoother and more stable. 

If this light flashes, however, bring your Ford Explorer in for service. A flashing light indicates a broader system issue that a professional can handle for you.

Service Engine Soon

Finally, your Service Engine Soon light is shaped like the engine block in your vehicle. It’s normal to see this light briefly illuminate when the engine activates, but it should then turn off.

If you see the Service Engine Soon dashboard light while your engine is running, it indicates a system error. If that happens or the light begins flashing, you should not continue to drive your vehicle. For your safety, pull over as soon as possible and then have your vehicle checked out.
